“Keep playing music; it keeps you sharp and young! I sang those songs at your age!"
We are so excited to be performing in person again!
If you are a string player, flautist, guitarist, pianist or singer at LASA and would like to join us to make a difference in the lives of some elderly people, please email Aurna.
Aurna is a junior at the Liberal Arts and Science Academy. She began singing at the age of 2 years old, and cannot imagine a life without it. She performs different genres of music, ranging from pop to classical. She has participated in multiple vocal competitions, such as winning the NATS musical theatre in the Texoma region, placing 3rd in the nationwide Hal Leonard Vocal Competition, and advancing to UIL state 2 years in a row. She wants to use her vocal talents to give back to her community, which is why she began performing in senior residential facilities during the pandemic. She is grateful for the impact she is able to have on the residents, and hopes to continue this.
Aurna Mukherjee leads the LASA branch of Harmonies for the Elderly, ATX. She is a Junior at LASA.
Anika Patel is a junior at LASA high school. She has been playing the violin for 12 years and she has been a longtime student of Megan Canney and Luna Chu. Anika was Concertmaster of the Region 18 All-Region MS Symphony Orchestra, Concertmaster of the Interlochen Intermediate Strings Orchestra, Concertmaster of the UT Austin Dell Medical School Red River Orchestra, as well as a member of UT-Austin String Project, Austin Youth Orchestra, and Kealing Symphony Orchestra. In high school, she is a member of the LASA Honors Orchestra, a member of the Region 18 Symphony Orchestra, and a member of the 2022 TMEA All-State Sinfonietta Orchestra. Highlights of her training include attending Interlochen Center for the Arts in northern Michigan for 7 summers and her summer at Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival working under the direction of Sandy Yamamoto. This year, Anika was selected to perform a solo at the Weill Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall. She is the founder of Music in the Community, a volunteer organization bringing musical performances to patient care settings in Austin.
The music Harmonies for the Elderly performs has been specially selected by HFTE Founder, Deepa Rajan, a Westwood HS grad, a graduate of Neuroscience from Vanderbilt who is currently doing a MD/PhD at UCSF.
The music is fun to play and easy to catch onto if you are a somewhat proficient musician. We have planned to perform one Saturday a month at a memory care facility in town.
Performances can count toward service hours.
